Miriam Monihan, OTD, OTR/L, CDRS

Dr. Miriam Monahan, is an occupational therapist and certified driving rehabilitation specialist. She has over 20 years of experience in driving rehabilitation, and is recognized for her clinical and behind-the-wheel evaluation and intervention skills. She is founder of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Driver Rehabilitation Institute. She is an adjunct professor for University of Florida’s Certificate in Driver Rehabilitation Therapy program. She has served as a consultant on numerous federal projects, and lectures extensively on topics related to driving rehabilitation and community mobility. Dr. Monahan has been the clinical expert in multiple studies involving medical conditions and driving. She practices driving rehabilitation through Smith OT and Driving in Petaluma, CA.

 

General Seminar Abstract:

In recent years, advances in technology have allowed researchers to understand better, how vision and visual-cognitive systems play a key role in driving fitness for a number of commonly seen neurological conditions (Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain Injury, and Autism). The presenter will synopsize the research and apply it to occupational therapy and driving rehabilitation. Participants will learn how to tailor their vision screening, driving routes, and treatment methods to address their clients’ needs. Whether you work strictly in a clinical setting or in a driving rehabilitation practice you will walk away with knowledge you can apply immediately into your practice.

After completing this seminar, participants will be able to:

  1. Select specific vision screening and visual-cognitive assessments that are applicable to their clients’ neurological condition

  2. Incorporate tasks and conditions in the driving routes to better ascertain their clients’ fitness to drive

  3. Name interventions tools and strategies that can help mitigate deficits
